Nathan Nichols & Company

About Us

Nathan Nichols

Founder

Nathan Nichols, FounderNathan Nichols was born and raised in Keene, New Hampshire and attended high school in Gardener, Massachusetts - the former furniture capital of the United States. Nathan was born into the furniture industry, working in various furniture manufacturing plants alongside his father and grandfather during his teens. Nathan attended the University of Houston where he majored in Interior Design. After graduation, he worked for several different furniture stores in the New Hampshire area before moving to Wisconsin in 1990. Nathan settled in the Appleton area where he worked as a design consultant for Drexel Heritage Gallery.

A career milestone took place in 1993 when Betty Johnson of Betty Johnson Interiors introduced Nathan to Natalie Kohler Black who was the president of the Interior Design Group for Kohler Company, producers of Baker furniture. For 7 years Nathan worked exclusively for Kohler, managing their design outlet store in Kohler, Wisconsin until his move to Door County in 2000. A business acquaintance had suggested that there was a need in Door County for a high-end furniture and design firm. Nathan immediately fell in love with the peninsula and purchased his current location in Baileys Harbor the same day he first saw it in 2000.

In the words of one Baker furniture executive, ““Nathan’s understanding of gracious living coincides beautifully with Kohler Interior’s vision for their stores. His style exemplifies our ideal of the ultimate boutique store - right down to the little dog, ready to greet customers!”

Shelly Kerwin

Designer

Shelly Kerwin, Store Manager and Lead DesignerShelly brings to the Nathan Nichols’ mix the ability to see a project through from conception to completion, with her specialty being window treatments and fabric work. “I enjoy the mechanics of a project as much as the end product,” said Shelly. “There have been some jobs here in Door County which have truly been feats of engineering. People love their windows here, but want window treatments to literally disappear so they can enjoy the lovely views that Door County has to offer. I enjoy the challenge!”

Shelly’s projects range from these types of window treatments – to ultra custom fabric work including furniture upholstery and bed treatments. Shelly’s own home, as well as several of her clients’ homes, have been featured on home and garden walks and have even received national exposure in home magazine spreads.
